Alsico.

Europe's largest workwear provider aimed to consolidate all nine global websites into a single centralised platform.

Founded in Belgium in 1934, Alsico is a global leader in the design, manufacturing, and distribution of workwear, protective clothing, and uniforms.

With over 7,200 employees and 21 factories spanning 11 countries, Alsico required a future-proof digital platform to efficiently serve its markets worldwide.

Challenge

Traditionally, each market managed its own website independently. As Alsico approached the completion of a major rebranding project, the company aimed to centralise all these websites into a single platform. This new platform would allow each market to contribute content while also benefiting from a shared pool of centralised resources.

  • Each market operated its own dedicated server to host their website, which conflicted with Alsico's sustainability goals.
  • Following a technical and SEO review, Anything concluded that each market's website was competing with the others for SEO relevance due to their independent setups. The new solution needed to compliment each market in Googles rankings.
  • Each market operated differently, some used off-the-shelf CMS platforms like WordPress, others relied on custom-built systems, and some had their websites fully managed by external agencies. The new CMS needed to be easy to onboard for each market's team, providing them with the flexibility to manage independent content while ensuring consistency with the new brand guidelines.
  • The newly developed rebrand was professional, modern, and engaging, and Alsico needed all its digital properties to reflect and uphold these same standards.
  • Many of the existing websites scored poorly on Core Web Vitals and provided a subpar mobile experience.

Solution

Anything meticulously planned, designed and implemented a new digital platform that could seamlessly manage all market websites from a single CMS solution.

Seven language future-proof solution:

  • The solution was built around the Headless CMS, Storyblok. We selected Storyblok for its best-in-class content management capabilities, allowing each market to effortlessly manage their own website using an extensive range of customisable blocks.
  • The website is powered by the performance focused framework Astro. Unlike JavaScript heavy frameworks like React or Next.js, Astro takes a unique approach by only serving JavaScript when needed. This ensures minimal page weight and industry-leading Core Web Vitals performance.
  • Each market's dedicated servers were replaced with a single Netlify Serverless solution. This approach automatically distributes the website's code across the globe. As a result, the website delivers lightning-fast performance no matter where you access it from, while also ensuring maximum resilience with no single point of failure.
  • A robust and proven SEO strategy was implemented to address the issues of the previous setup. By utilising Hreflang tags within an automatically generated XML sitemap, search engines were informed when content was available in multiple languages, enabling Google to deliver the appropriate results based on the user's location.
  • With all websites now unified on a central platform, any new features or updates are instantly available to all markets.

Sustainability

In addition to delivering a stunning, robust and future-proof solution, we were committed to building a website with sustainability at its core. To align with this ethos, we transitioned from always-on dedicated servers to a serverless approach, significantly reducing the website's carbon footprint.
